Excessive Sweating

It is a condition that brings along important aesthetic problems.

Hyperhidrosis is defined as an excessive production of sweat in one or several regions of the body, generally caused by an excess of secretion dependent on the innervation of the sympathetic nervous system.

The anatomical regions most frequently affected are the face, underarms, and palms.

It is important to highlight the fact that sweating is not a disease, but one of the methods by which the body modulates body temperature, depending on physical activity, climate, and other factors. This happens thanks to nerves (part of the sympathetic nervous system), which run along the spinal column inside the thorax.

After years of study, today we know that certain nerves are responsible for carrying the stimulus to the regions affected by hyperhidrosis; in such a way that it is possible to act directly on them, by blocking their stimulus, without affecting the course of the rest of the sympathetic nervous system.

To which patients is this procedure indicated?

To those who consider that this disorder is the cause of a limitation or affectation in their relationship with the environment that surrounds them, to the detriment of their behavior and daily activities.

What does the surgical treatment consist of?

Under general anesthesia, two incisions of between 5 and 10 millimeters are made in the axillary region. Through one of them an optic is introduced to examine the thorax and visualize the sympathetic nerve, as well as its different ramifications. Through the second incision, the instrument that dissects the nerve to be blocked to correct the problem is introduced.

Once the nerve is dissected, titanium clips are placed to compress it and immediately annul its function. The same procedure

is performed on the contralateral side. The results are immediate.

After surgery, the patient remains in the hospital, with the possibility of resuming daily activities the following day.

New surgical options

We can now also offer our patients the alternative of surgery without general anesthesia to treat hyperhidrosis. This option greatly reduces the cost of the procedure.

Same way, there is the option of surgery without scars, in which incisions of no more than 5 millimeters are made in the least visible places of the thorax.
